John,
I intimately know how inaccessible and expensive higher education can be, especially if you’re low-income, first-generation, or a person of color. The student loan crisis affects all of us, even if we don’t have our own student loan debt, because it gatekeeps folks from freely pursuing education. If you agree and can afford it, can you rush a donation to our campaign before our fundraising deadline on January 31?
Here are 3 things I hate about student loan debt:
1️⃣ 45 million Americans are affected by the student loan debt crisis and are being crushed under $1.8 trillion in student loan debt.
2️⃣ As a country, we’re allowing kids as young as 17 to take on hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt and spend the rest of their lives paying that debt off.
3️⃣ According to the Roosevelt Institute, even erasing $50,000 in student loan debt per person would immediately increase Black wealth by 40%.1 Now, imagine if we erased all student loan debt.
Now, I’m calling on you, John.
55% of voters, including 52% of Republicans, support cancelling all current student debt and a majority of voters (51%) believe that student debt cancellation should apply universally, to all borrowers, and not just to certain groups such as low-wage workers.2
But we’re a year into the Biden administration and we’ve seen only the bare minimum when it comes to student loan debt. It took thousands of activists and organizers to call on Biden to even see a pause in student loan debt payments during a global pandemic.
We can’t just elect more Democrats, we’ve got to elect Democrats who aren’t bankrolled by corporations and who are committed to fighting for the everyday worker.
I’m committed to fighting the good fight, John, but I’ll be honest, too often our election outcomes are determined by how much money a campaign has. Right now we are barely hanging on. If we don’t meet our end-of-month goal of $8,002 we’ll have to seriously cut back. If you can, please donate $5 right now to send me to the Senate so I can fight for student loan debt cancellation.
Many thanks,
Morgan
