Yesterday, we learned that Justice Stephen Breyer will retire from the Supreme Court, clearing the way for President Biden to appoint a new Justice to the conservative-majority Court.
Friends, this is great news. The Supreme Court has the power to influence everything from LGBTQ+ and reproductive rights to campaign finance laws, so this opening is a chance for Democrats to appoint a fair and balanced voice to advance equal justice for all for decades to come.
And with our 50-seat majority, Democrats will be able to get the President’s nominee through the Senate without obstruction from Republicans.
But the truth is that Mitch McConnell and the Senate GOP have shown time and time again that they will stop at nothing to block Democrats’ Supreme Court nominees. Yesterday’s news underscores the fact that we have to protect and expand our Democratic Majority in the Senate if we’re going to protect the future of the Supreme Court. So, please, if you are able:
Mitch McConnell proved when he blocked Merrick Garland’s nomination in 2016 — and rammed through Amy Coney Barrett’s just last year — that he can’t be trusted as Majority Leader.
That’s why it’s so important that we re-elect Tammy Duckworth and hold the Senate this November.
All our best,
Team Duckworth
