John,
For years, natural gas has been touted as the wave of the future.
But bringing that future has required a massive buildout of natural gas infrastructure that now covers the United States. This has allowed gas utility companies to add new customers at record rates. An estimated 8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas is piped through our nationwide distribution system to homes and businesses annually.
This has all come at an enormous cost — one that is not sustainable and has been often swept under the rug.
More than 400 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions are generated by natural gas annually in the U.S. Utility companies spend over $21 billion each year expanding the system and replacing old pipes.
Big Gas companies have sold governments, builders, and consumers on the notion that gas is an essential service. The result is that thousands of new buildings continue to be connected to the gas system — and utilities pass the connection costs on to existing customers.
Instead of using the industry-friendly term “natural gas,” we should be calling this product what it is: “fossil gas.”
The bottom line is we are paying for expanded gas use at the very moment the climate crisis is demanding we cut fossil fuel use swiftly.
In a climate emergency, it does not make sense to expand the fossil gas system when there are already cost-effective and sustainable clean energy alternatives, such as electric heat pumps and induction stoves.
John, SEEC members are working to help Americans end their dependency on fossil gas. Investing in a product and system that destroys our climate rather than protects it makes no sense.
Will you let SEEC members know you’re standing with them as they take on Big Gas and its lobbyists that are defending the billions spent annually? [[link removed]]
