Hi John, Conflict, climate shocks and COVID-19 are causing catastrophic levels of world hunger, forcing millions to make an impossible choice: starvation, migration or even the unthinkable – selling their children to someone who can feed them. In countries like Afghanistan, raising children has never been harder. A stunning 98% of people there don’t have enough food to eat. Bibi*, Mohammad* and their six kids fled their farm after months of drought and devastated crops. Shortly after, Bibi gave birth to twins. One was given to a childless family in exchange for a small sum of money to ensure she would survive. This loss is a source of unimaginable pain for the poverty-stricken parents, but they knew they couldn’t afford to feed two more children. Their 12-year-old son pushes carts at the local market to supplement the family’s income, but they’re still skipping meals and surviving mostly on bread. John, these are the kinds of desperate, life-altering decisions that hunger pushes families to make. Send a message to President Biden and your members of Congress: we must act NOW to provide global leadership and urgently-needed funding to prevent widespread famine. Childhood can’t survive where hunger thrives. Malnutrition exposes kids to life-long cognitive and developmental impacts. Food insecurity often leads to negative household coping strategies like withdrawal from school, child labor, child marriage and other forms of violence. It’s linked to nearly half of all deaths of kids under five. Save the Children, our sister organization, is among the many humanitarian agencies racing to save lives – but resources are running low, and the staggering level of need is climbing every day. Tell President Biden and Congress: time is running out for millions of starving children around the world. We have to help. |
