Our 20th annual "State of Tobacco Control" report evaluates states and the federal government on tobacco control laws and policies necessary to save lives. This year's report shows significant progress in reducing tobacco use over the past 20 years. However, a new generation of tobacco products, especially e-cigarettes and flavored tobacco products, threatens that progress.

Key Findings

-Adult smoking rates declined from 21.6% in 2003 to 14% in 2019, a 35% decline.
-The youth vaping epidemic continues. More than two million middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2021.
-The country continues to see more tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke in communities experiencing health disparities. More progress needs to be made towards eliminating these inequalities.
End the Sale of All Flavored Tobacco Products
The evidence is clear: kids follow the flavors. We must protect our youth and ask U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to move forward with rules to prohibit the sale of all menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars.
