John,
While 2021 brought new challenges, we’ve made progress and kept Michigan moving forward. We’re stronger in large part because of science and life-saving vaccines, and the resilience and grit we see from Michiganders every single day.
I get asked sometimes: after a pandemic, national recession, 500-year flooding events, a kidnapping and murder plot, how the heck do I keep doing this?
My answer is simple. I do this for my daughters and every family in Michigan. I want to make them proud. I want my girls to know their mom stood up for what she believed in and did the right things through a once-in-a-century crisis, unexpected challenges, and constant threats.
We have come a long way, and I am hopeful about the path ahead because Michigan is strong, and getting stronger every day.
I have a lot planned for the path forward, but first, I’m going to ask you to recommit yourself alongside us. Will you help us continue to make progress here in Michigan by donating $5 today?

Here in Michigan, we put politics aside and come together to put Michiganders first by focusing on the issues that matter most to families.
Over the last year, we took action together and got a lot done.
- We brought in an historic investment from GM that will create thousands of good-paying jobs and lead the way in electric vehicle manufacturing.
- Michigan has invested $6.4 billion to repair, replace, or rehabilitate 13,198 lane miles of road and 903 bridges in every region of our state while supporting nearly 82,000 jobs.
- We delivered over $420 million in relief to small businesses, empowering them to expand operations and retain over 200,000 jobs through COVID.
- We expanded access to high-quality childcare.
- We enacted criminal justice reform.
- We put 170,000 Michiganders on tuition-free paths to higher education or skills training through Michigan Reconnect and Futures for Frontliners.
- And last year, together, we made the largest education investment in state history without raising taxes—something we’ve done three years in a row. We closed the funding gap between schools—something four governors before me tried to do—investing $8,700 into every student in every district to improve their in-class experience.
I’m committed to working night and day to keep Michigan moving forward, and I want you right beside me as we get it done. Will you contribute $5 before the night ends, and show that we are committed to the future of our state?

That brings us to what’s next. Tonight, I put forward a few proposals that will build on the work we’ve done together and grow our economy by cutting taxes and lowering costs.
I proposed that we cut taxes by taking common-sense action on things like phasing out the retirement tax once and for all and tripling Michigan’s Earned Income Tax Credit to pull tens of thousands of Michiganders out of poverty and send over 730,000 families an average of almost $3,000.
And we can continue to cut costs for Michiganders by working to lower costs on insulin, electric vehicles, and mental health resources.
Through everything we’ve faced over the last few years, I thought often about the time in my life when I was sandwiched between two generations of my family – taking care of my newborn daughter and my dying mom who was battling brain cancer. I learned I could do more than I had imagined. It can be hard to see in the moment, but tough times make us stronger.
Making a difference for the people we love is what motivates all of us. It’s the reason I’m standing here today. It’s why I get up determined and optimistic about the future—my girls. I want a better future for them and all our kids. Even on the hardest days, I am grateful to serve my fellow Michiganders.
I’m ready to continue the action we took last year to grow our economy, cut costs for hardworking Michiganders, and put our state first. Can I count on you to support the work my administration has done and will continue to do by pitching in $5 today?

We are doers, united against inaction. Optimists, united against pessimism. Believers, united against cynicism. We fight for each other, not with each other. We come together to get things done. We are capable of greatness.
I will work hard every day for Michiganders. I will always believe in Michigan because we are strong and getting stronger every day.
Let’s get it done,
Gretchen Whitmer
