SAN JOSE TO FORCE LIABILITY INSURANCE ON LAWFUL GUN OWNERS IN CITY

City forcing the law abiding to pay for the misdeeds of the criminal

In a move sure to initiate a challenge in court, the San Jose City Council
took a swipe at the 2nd Amendment Tuesday by voting to require all gun
owners in the city to carry liability insurance and pay a special tax
simply for owning a gun.

According to San Jose's Mayor Sam Liccardo, forcing liability insurance
would "encourage" those in the 55,000 San Jose households who legally own
at least one to have gun safes, install trigger locks and take gun safety
classes, even though each is already mandated by state law.

"The kind of liability insurance the City wants doesn't exist, and so this
is an insincere effort that will have zero impact on criminal use of guns"
said GOC Executive Director Sam Paredes in response to Tuesday's vote.

"Politicians like Liccardo and his fellow city representatives are too lazy
to deal with the real issue of human behavior. It's easier to assign the
blame - and the financial responsibility - to the good guys. It's right out
of the Leftist playbook - blame every one but the law breaker."

Mayor Liccardo's office contacted GOC in December for input on the City's
"Gun Harm Reduction" measures, and although GOC responded immediately, the
City didn't follow-up until Monday, January 24, the day prior to the vote.

In a phone conversation with the Major's staff, Paredes indicated that GOC
was always interested in discussing crime control measures but that gun
control would never be on the table as it had never proven to be an
effective solution. Further, he stated that it was an insincere and
disingenuous move to make contact literally hours before a vote was to take
place.

"I guarantee that there will be a significant legal response," Paredes
said. "This is so clearly something that we believe we will win in court
that we will be asking the city of San Jose to repay our legal fees."

The liability insurance mandate is the latest scheme to undermine the gun
rights of the law abiding and the media has been blowing up GOC's phones
for comment. Sam Paredes has been interviewed by such news outlets as NBC
News, NPR, AP, ABC News, the LA Times, the Reload and Telemundo.
