John, with voting rights under attack across the nation, I’m taking a stand to protect voting rights and strengthen civic engagement here in Philadelphia.
During this past November election, we had an abysmal voter turnout of 21.8% in Philadelphia. We must do more to ensure that people are using their right to vote, which is why tomorrow I’m introducing my Civics Legislative Agenda.
Here’s what’s included in this package of bills:
- A charter change for the required age of an individual to run for Mayor (from the current 25 years of age to 21) and City Council (from 25 to the voting age, currently 18)
- A charter change to make the Office of the Inspector General permanent
- A bill clarifying conflicts of interest and providing greater disclosure for non-city sources of income
- A bill to create a public financing program for city elections
- A bill to clarify the single-account rule for city candidates to ensure proper spending and disclosure
- An exploration of ranked choice voting in Philadelphia
Through this legislation I hope to increase voter participation, create more trust in the electoral process, and lower required ages for candidacy in our city.
John, will you sign your name today to let me know if you support my Civics Legislative Agenda?
ADD YOUR NAME
Our democracy depends on civic participation, John, and I will do everything in my power to make it easier for Philadelphians to vote and run for office.
Thanks for supporting me in these crucial efforts,
Councilmember Derek Green
