Dear John,
What an exciting day! ICYMI, leading news outlets are reporting that Justice Stephen Breyer will retire at the end of this term. While Justice Breyer has not formally announced, we believe the rumors are true and thank him for his 27 years of dedicated service.
AFJ is preparing for the fight ahead as President Biden prepares to nominate the first Black woman to a seat on the Supreme Court.

Over the past year, AFJ has worked hand in hand with the administration and Senate to confirm five Black women to the circuit courts — nearly doubling pre-Biden administration numbers . These luminary legal minds include: Candace Jackson-Akiwumi (7th Cir.), Ketanji Brown-Jackson (D.C. Cir), Eunice Lee (2d Cir.), Tiffany Cunningham (Fed. Cir.), and most recently Holly Thomas (9th Cir.). We are ready to confirm one of them to the Supreme Court of the United States.
Since our founding, our courts have been dominated by the perspectives of wealthy, white men and those that favor entrenching the interests of the powerful over the rights of all of us. But many of the decisions the Court makes disproportionality impact communities of color. In a moment where voting rights, abortion access, and democracy itself are under attack, it is critical we have the perspective of a Black woman justice with a commitment to equal justice and human rights on the Court.
AFJ is ready to bring this vision to life. Donate: [link removed]
As the only organization that produces accessible, in-depth research on Circuit and Supreme Court nominees for the public, we already have the best, available reports on each of the potential nominees. So I can say confidently that any one of these candidates would be a stellar Justice. Please be on the lookout for those in your inbox next week as we update our research.
This is a historic moment for this country, and I promise you we are ready. But we cannot do this without you. Conservative Senators will try to trivialize the nominee and use every tactic to delay her hearing. With your support, we will be there to remind them and the public of her record of achievement and make sure she is seated by the start of the new term.
Let‘s make history together: [link removed]
With gratitude,
