Last week, we witnessed another act of obstruction to the President’s agenda on the part of Senators Manchin, Sinema, and their Republican colleagues.
Both Manchin and Sinema joined Republicans to stand behind the racist filibuster, blocking two voting rights bills that would not only protect Americans’ right to vote, but expand access to vote-by-mail and advance automatic voter registration.
Let’s make it clear: You cannot call yourself a Democrat when you stand behind a racist relic from the past like the filibuster.
In fact, Republican leader Mitch McConnell congratulated Manchin and Sinema for their "courage" in upholding the filibuster.1
Republicans have historically used the filibuster to block advancements in civil rights and liberties for Black and brown Americans, and they continue this racist history by blocking voting rights protections today.
