Nominate an LGBTQ Black Woman to the Supreme Court

John,

I doubt I’m the first to share this with you, but U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer today announced his retirement at the end of this term. This presents us with an enormous opportunity to make history and urge President Biden to appoint an LGBTQ person to the Supreme Court.

President Biden said during the campaign that he would appoint a Black woman when given the opportunity – and we agree it is well past time for that to happen. So today, we call on President Biden to nominate one of the many LGBTQ Black women leaders qualified for the position, such as Washington State Supreme Court Justice G. Helen Whitener.

Justice Breyer was a champion of equality during his nearly three-decade career on the bench and replacing him with an LGBTQ Black woman justice would be a powerful way to carry on his legacy. We’ve seen time and time again that LGBTQ freedoms are fought for and won in the courts. It is time we have representation in the highest judicial body tasked with protecting our fundamental rights.

When we announced four bold goals for our Presidential Appointments Initiative in August 2020, securing our first LGBTQ U.S. Supreme Court Justice was one of them. But we are also working to secure our first LGBTQ women ambassadors, LGBTQ ambassadors of color and trans ambassadors. We are continuing to place LGBTQ leaders in positions at every level of the administration – from entry level to Cabinet secretaries.

But we can’t do this advocacy and work without you. Donate to support our Presidential Appointments Initiative so we can fight for more LGBTQ people at every level of government.

Thank you for your support,

Ruben Gonzales
