President Biden promised to address the climate crisis, saying he was going “to supercharge our administration’s ambitious plan to confront the existential threat of climate change.”
Yet here we are one year later and meaningful action has been blocked at every step. It seems that every time there’s talk of moving forward with legislation to help keep fossil fuels in the ground, transition to green energy, and reduce our carbon emissions, one senator is there to stand in the way — West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin.
Why? Because Senator Manchin has a long, troubling track record of standing in the way of climate action and clean energy. Manchin has pocketed millions of dollars from his son’s coal firm, and he's received hundreds of thousands in campaign dollars from Big Oil & Gas.
When it comes to transitioning away from fossil fuels, we simply don’t have time for policymakers who ignore the environmental threat and delay real action to stop climate change. If we do the right thing NOW, catastrophe can be avoided — but we need to act fast.
As corporations push to extract every last drop of profit from dirty energy, legislators like Joe Manchin are enabling them — encouraging their behavior and profiting off the very industries that are harming our planet and our communities.
It’s a fact: Human activity is causing global climate change, but that also means that human activity can stop global climate change. President Biden can take the necessary steps to fight the climate crisis — including ending drilling on public lands, stopping new fossil fuel infrastructure projects and declaring a climate emergency — none of which require congressional approval or Joe Manchin’s support.
