THIS MONTH AT

One way to fight the exploitation of children is by having informed conversations that help bring awareness and keep kids safe. Whether it’s a conversation with friends, colleagues, someone in your community, or your own child, talking about child exploitation can be intimidating. Maybe you don’t feel you have the right words, information, or perspective to respond.

Join us this Monday afternoon for a round table discussion with the Love146 Prevention Education team for tips about how to have effective conversations that can help bring change.

On January 19th, Snapchat announced new security measures to their platform in order to make it harder for adults to connect with adolescents they don’t know. This change was prompted by a desire to protect children from people trying to sell them drugs, but it could also help protect children from other predators, such as traffickers. While this is an important step, the tech community has a long way to create a safer online community for youth.

Setting boundaries is a skill - and it takes practice! Learning how to set boundaries is important for a lot of things in life. When you set boundaries it can help prevent harm and hurt - including being exploited or taken advantage of. In our Not a Number trafficking prevention curriculum, we talk a lot about boundaries and building that critical skill. Need some tips on how to get started with boundaries yourself – or a resource to pass along to a young person in your life? We created an Instagram post to help.

Last year, Love146's Director of Prevention, Aria Flood, was a fellow for Class 7 of the Human Trafficking Leadership Academy (HTLA), which is hosted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families. This group, including survivor leaders, worked together to develop recommendations on how the Human Trafficking movement and federally funded service providers can address institutional barriers to accessing services for survivors of human trafficking while improving their response to communities of color. These important recommendations were just published and you can read them today.

Tamara Clark, Love146's Director of the Connecticut Survivor Program, spoke on the radio show LoveBabz LoveTalk about Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Tamarra shared resources, stories, and tips for people across Connecticut and beyond looking to address human trafficking. The show also included calls from the audience looking for recommendations from Tamarra. It was a great conversation that addressed the importance of recognizing human trafficking and supporting our communities.

It’s almost never obvious, but child trafficking is happening in every type of community. Love146 has several resources just for parents and caregivers. This month, we also shared a PSA created to inform caregivers about how to engage and watch out for the children in their lives. Browse these resources, including an online safety guide and a caregiver webinar, and share them with other parents and caregivers in your network.

The term “red flag” means you see something that’s a reason to stop and consider your safety. There are red flags for lots of things – depression, dating violence, suicide – and seeing one or two red flags doesn’t necessarily mean that something is happening to you, it simply lets you know that you should probably step back and take another look at the situation. But wait - what even is a red flag? We put together helpful definitions on our webiste.

How are you supposed to feel when you see a guilty verdict like this? We in the Love146 offices know that bittersweet moment of cheering when rulings like this come in for our clients, knowing how much suffering has taken place, and how hard justice was fought for.

It shouldn’t take years of complaints, blind eyes, and investigative journalism for justice to come. Traffickers should be more afraid than they are, but it takes justice like this. We are grateful for the bravery and perseverance of survivors, journalists, law enforcement, lawyers, judges, and jury.
