President Biden committed to nominating a Black woman to the Supreme Court, and we need to hold him to it Hey Indivisibles,
Meagan Hatcher-Mays here, with some BIG Supreme Court news -- we just learned that Justice Stephen Breyer is retiring, leaving a vacancy on the bench. I’ve been making noise about the courts for years now, and for good reason: SCOTUS has become ground zero for hyper-partisan ultra-conservative decisions, from gutting voting rights to rolling back environmental regulations to attacking workers’ rights and reproductive freedom.
All these attacks on our most basic and important rights disproportionately affect Black women and women of color, which is why it’s crucial that President Biden make good on a promise he made almost two years ago: nominating the first Black woman to the Supreme Court.
We need to hold him to his promise. So I’m asking you to do a couple things:
Justice Breyer served nearly 30 years on the Court, in that time authoring opinions in support of reproductive rights and against the death penalty. I’m thankful for his service, as well as for his decision to step down at a moment when President Biden can preserve the current balance of the court. And now is the moment when we need to step up and do what it takes to ensure Biden meets his commitment, using this moment to promote representation on the Court and protect the constitutional rights of those who’ve fought so hard for them.
We’ll be in touch more in the coming days about how to stay involved in this fight. In the meantime, I’m grateful for everything you can do right now to get the ball rolling.
In solidarity, Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Director of Democracy Policy Indivisible
