PFAW Member,
Social media and online companies have failed to provide adequate transparency for users around political advertising on their platforms.
Russian interference in the 2016 election demonstrates the need to improve transparency for online political ads as a way to bolster election security. Russia spread disinformation online through social media platforms like Facebook because they reached millions of Americans, cheaply.
Tell Congress to act now to protect our elections from dishonest advertising!>>
The Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 requires political advertisements on television, radio, and satellite to disclose the sponsor of the advertisement. The same requirements should apply online.
The Honest Ads Act, introduced by Senators Mark Warner and Amy Klobuchar, aimed at countering foreign interference in our elections, would achieve this goal. It would require platforms to disclose the purchasers of ads, applying the same rules that exist for TV and radio.
We must demand Congress ensure the requirement for more transparency around online ad purchases is in place. We must protect the security of our elections!
Sign the petition: demand Congress pass the Honest Ads Act and require transparency for political ads>>
Thank you,
- Zach, PFAW
