John, Republican legislators across the country are systematically impeding on Americans’ constitutional right to vote, particularly among communities of color and disenfranchised groups. But this suppression extends beyond the ballot box, to the very districts that define where and how people vote. Following the 2020 Census, lawmakers in Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Illinois, and many other states proposed outrageously gerrymandered district maps that silence Latinx, Black, and Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders communities to protect political insiders’ power. These maps may or may not hold up in court, but we know this: When power-hungry politicians can hand-pick their voters, they prioritize protecting their own jobs -- not communities’ needs. The Senate has the power to stop this blatant attack on our voting rights. By passing the Freedom to Vote Act, they can end partisan gerrymandering once and for all. But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is using the filibuster, that Jim Crow relic, to keep the bill from reaching a vote. Sign if you agree: The Senate must take bold action to help end gerrymandering once and for all. Redistricting is supposed to be about making sure everyone has a voice. But partisan politicians are shamefully abusing the process and making it a tool to take over our democracy. If Congress doesn’t respond, the very same extremists behind today's wave of anti-democracy disinformation and vote-suppressing state laws will keep taking map-rigging to new levels. And thanks to advancements in technology, they’re now able to draw maps that silence voters -- especially Black and Brown voters -- with surgical precision. We cannot allow politicians to restrict our freedom to vote, whether it be through gerrymandered maps or roadblocks to voting itself. We must pass the Freedom to Vote Act today.
