Jack, by now you've probably seen the news that Stephen Breyer is retiring, giving President Biden his first opportunity to nominate someone to the Supreme Court.
Confirming President Biden's nominee won't be easy. Mitch McConnell stole a Supreme Court from President Obama in 2016, and McConnell's going to fight like hell to steal this one from President Biden. We can't let that happen—and we must be ready to take immediate action on breaking news items like Breyer's retirement as soon as they take place because Democrats have no room for error in an evenly-divided 50-50 Senate.
Days like these demonstrate the importance of hitting our monthly fundraising targets. As soon as this news broke, various members of the Daily Kos news and activism teams went to work. Joan McCarter wrote the story that appeared on our website, Michael Langenmayr put together a news alert that we sent via email, Paul Hogarth started working on a text for those on our mobile action list, and Sarah Hogg began touching base with progressive partners across the country to begin planning out a campaign to make sure Democratic senators—two in particular (you know who they are)—are ready to support a qualified, progressive nominee to the Supreme Court.
This is where your small dollar donations to Daily Kos go—so that we have the tools and the staff to run fast, scalable campaigns on news you can do something about. We wouldn't be in a position like this, ready to pounce into action and ready to kick off a major campaign at a moment's notice, without readers and activists like you.
Daily Kos needs to raise $52,894 to hit our goal. Can you chip in $5 right now to help us close the books on January so we have the resources to take immediate action on any and all breaking news stories as they happen in the months ahead?

Jack, Daily Kos ended 2021 at 102.06 percent of its annual fundraising goal. That's great news—and also a little worrying, to be honest. Halfway through the year, we were 10 percent ahead of where we thought we'd be, but we came up short month after month in the final months of the year, majorly shrinking the margin we had to work with.
We expected a downturn in the second half of the year, as the threat Donald Trump and his Republican sycophants in Congress posed to the country faded in some people's memories. But this is an election year, and right now we're on track to miss our first monthly goal of 2022.
Daily Kos delivers a lot of bang for your buck. We have a small team of writers and activists working hard to deliver news you can do something about. More than 75 million people came to Daily Kos in 2020, and we recruited 111,642 of them to volunteer for Democratic candidates in that election. We can beat those numbers this year and help Democrats expand their razor thin majorities with your help.
Daily Kos needs to raise $71,226 to close the books on January. Can you please donate $5 right now to help us hit our goal?
