John,
Tax filing season is underway, but due to decades of disinvestment by congressional Republicans―resulting in a loss of 14,000 workers―and the Covid pandemic, the IRS is already behind.[1]
This month, the IRS’s internal watchdog reported that there was a backlog of 12 million unprocessed individual and business tax returns.[2] The IRS is already warning taxpayers that this will lead to slower refunds for millions of Americans as we file our returns this year.
It also means billions of dollars in lost revenue as the IRS is unable to effectively audit millionaires and billionaires who evade $163 billion in taxes they owe each year.[3]
President Biden has called on Congress to invest $80 billion over ten years to modernize the IRS and hire the necessary staff to effectively serve U.S. taxpayers and crack down on wealthy tax cheats. Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund is rallying our national allies demanding Congress act.
Pitch in today to demand Congress provide an $80 billion funding boost to the IRS, which will net $400 billion in new revenue―mostly from the rich and corporations.[4]
This $400 billion in new revenue over 10 years can be used to create jobs and help families afford healthcare, childcare, education, housing and to combat the climate crisis.
The bottom line is that the IRS doesn’t have the resources to do its job. It has fewer employees today than any time since the 1970s, even though the U.S. population has grown by about 100 million since then.[5] That’s why you can’t get your phone calls answered or your refunds on time.
The IRS’s annual budget is being considered in Congress right now. It needs a lot more money to achieve better customer service for ordinary taxpayers, more on-time refunds, and less tax cheating by the rich.
Demand Congress invest $80 billion in the IRS over 10 years to boost customer service and crack down on wealthy tax cheats, which will result in $400 billion in new revenue. Donate today!
