Friend,
I ran to serve as Colorado’s Attorney General to protect the rights of all Coloradans. One of those rights is the right to choose whether to have an abortion and seek reproductive health care. Over the last three years, I have consistently stood up to protect access to legal and safe abortions, access to birth control, and women’s health care. That’s why it is meaningful to have the support of NARAL as I seek a second term.
My commitment to protecting reproductive health care is rooted in my commitment to protecting equal rights for all. At her confirmation hearing, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg made the following critical point:
It is essential to woman’s equality with man that she be the decision maker, that her choice be controlling. If you impose restraints that impede her choice, you are disadvantaging her because of her sex.
As I honor Justice Ginsburg’s legacy and her inspiring example, I will continue to defend Roe v. Wade, as I am now doing before the Supreme Court in two separate cases. Over the last three years, I have also defended women’s access to birth control coverage under the Affordable Care Act and prevailed in the fight against the Title X Gag Rule in federal court, protecting access to reproductive health services and information for women and families.
As the Supreme Court considers whether to overrule Roe v. Wade, I will be fighting in Colorado to establish an affirmative protection of the right to choose. Enacting such a protection will honor our longstanding commitment to protecting reproductive health care, dating back to former Governor Dick Lamm’s leadership. As we know, making abortions illegal will not end abortions; doing so will only end legal and safe abortions, particularly for poor women. Many people today haven’t ever lived during a time of back alley abortions. We need to keep fighting so that we don’t once again witness such an era.
