Residents in the District of Columbia are accountable for all of the duties of citizenship in the United States. They serve on juries, in the U.S. military, and work hard to build safe, strong communities where they live. They also pay more federal taxes than those in 22 other states and pay more to the federal government than they receive in services.
Since DC’s founding in 1801, district residents have had to endure systemic inequality while being denied their full rights of citizenship that residents of other states receive. That includes representation in Congress. The great injustice of taxation without representation was wrong in 1776 and it is still wrong today.
We must right this historic wrong by making Washington DC a state. Sign the petition: No taxation without representation! Statehood for DC.

Opponents to DC statehood are afraid that it would partially correct a structural bias in the Senate’s composition, which overwhelmingly favors low-population, rural states that are usually more conservative than the rest of the country. That imbalance gives those residents more power when they cast their votes, and results in public policy that is out of line with national popular sentiment. Moreover, the campaign against DC statehood is a ferocious attempt to disenfranchise Black voters. DC is a historically Black city and Black people still make up 47% of the population.
DC needs congressional approval to pass laws, which is not required by any state. Congress has repeatedly vetoed many important DC laws, causing great harm to the public health and safety of frontline communities. DC residents shouldn’t be beholden to Congress when it doesn’t have representation in Congress.
Sign the petition: DC deserves proper representation. Give DC statehood now!
