// A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO
Thanks to the Pandemic, Women Now Need Roe More Than Ever
Dear Colleagues,
This past Saturday marked the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling that protects a pregnant person’s freedom to choose abortion care.
We must acknowledge the grim fact that the law may not stand for us to celebrate its 50th year.
Let’s face it: Women in the U.S. with financial means—usually white women—have always been able to access safe abortions, regardless of the law. Roe just leveled the playing field so that women of color and lower-income women could have safe abortions too. Our laws must strive to serve our communities with fair systems that apply equally for all of us, not just for the privileged few.
As WFN’s 2022 membership renewal period closes at the end of this month, I’m reminded of all the incredible leaders in our sister organizations across the globe. I’m thankful to all of you for putting dollars into organizations run by marginalized genders that are trying to preserve or expand a pregnant person’s right to bodily autonomy in the U.S. and around the world.
After a landmark 2021 ruling [[link removed]] from Mexico’s Supreme Court decriminalizing abortion, Fondos Semillas [[link removed]] is now sharing their experiences working around restrictive government policies with grassroots organizations in Texas since SB8. The Women's Fund of Rhode Island [[link removed]] is pushing for state health insurance plans to be allowed to cover abortion services. The Global Fund for Women [[link removed]] is working to ensure future U.S. presidents can’t reinstate the “global gag rule” that prevents health organizations around the world who receive U.S. funding from providing information about abortion services.
Thank you for joining the largest global alliance dedicated to advancing the unwavering fight for gender equality and justice. If you haven’t already, there’s still time to join us [[link removed]].
In Solidarity,
Elizabeth
