It’s time to boldly go where no administration has gone before. It’s time to forgive student loan debt.
Will you stand and support the 42 million Americans who will benefit from student loan forgiveness? [link removed]
Before you give the “I paid my own way” talk, I want you to know that I did too. Yet, I still support student loan forgiveness and here’s why.
As the cost of living continues to rise coupled with the pandemic and stagnant wages, student loans are becoming a heavier burden. As the second largest consumer debt category (the first being mortgage debt), it’s estimated that student loan debt in 2021 was roughly $1.7 trillion. That’s a whole lot of moolah that can be freed up to be spent elsewhere, as well as narrow the racial wealth gap.
The racial wealth gap is caused by a multitude of factors – all of which would be great lessons for another day (perhaps in a CRT class?). But for anecdotal sake, the lack of generational wealth in communities of color means students of color take out more loans than their white peers. And once in the workforce, students of color earn significantly less than their white peers. If you can’t pay your bills you can’t 1) pay your loans, 2) save any money, 3) can’t build generational wealth, and 4) can't narrow the racial wealth gap.
Simply put, we NEED equity in education. We need to reinvest in our communities of color by helping students of color – past, present, and future.
Chip in $2 today so PowerPAC can help support local organizations and candidates fighting for student loan forgiveness. [link removed]
