Pacific Justice Institute went up against one of the largest healthcare systems in the U.S. to fight for the religious accommodation rights of hundreds of healthcare workers—and won!

PJI is honored to represent Dr. Casey Delcoco, among a host of other healthcare workers, in a case we brought against Ascension Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ascension Health unconstitutionally required their employees to be vaccinated for COVID-19. Many employees submitted requests for religious accommodations, and Ascension merely dispatched a boilerplate denial of all requests, placed those employees on unpaid leave, and gave them an ultimatum to be vaccinated by January 4, 2022, or face termination.

PJI’s Detroit office, with affiliate attorney Eric Bohnet, filed the lawsuit in federal court in the Southern District of Indiana, asking for an injunction and damages. Our lawsuit pressured Ascension Hospital to abruptly change tack and allow the vast majority of its PJI-represented workforce to return to their positions at the hospital. Along with saving perhaps one thousand healthcare jobs, this effort also protected the rights of believers across the country, and established a better environment allowing other hospitals and health care organizations to hire back even more employees!

And even after compelling Ascension to back down, PJI continues to help these clients work through the EEOC system and connect with PJI affiliate attorneys who will pursue their damages claims.

If these healthcare workers went to a for-profit law firm, they would face tens of thousands of dollars in costs for representation and defense.
