People For Member,

“No taxation without representation” was the slogan that led to a
revolution in our nation, yet it is still happening in our country
today. The residents of the District of Columbia pay more federal taxes
than those in 22 other states and pay more to the federal government than
they receive in services.

Yet, those residents – who are predominantly Black and brown and members
of frontline communities – are denied the most basic right that founded
our country: representation.

petition demanding that Congress approve D.C. statehood immediately! >>

D.C. residents bear all the responsibilities of full citizenship: they
serve on juries and in the U.S. military, and work hard to build safe,
strong communities where they live. And yet, the more than 700,000 people
who call D.C. home have no vote on any decisions our Congress makes every
day. In fact, to pass laws D.C. must first acquire congressional approval,
something which no state must do. Congress has repeatedly vetoed many
important D.C. laws, causing harm to the public health and safety of
communities throughout the District.

We can’t allow the day-to-day governance of the District of Columbia to be
subject to the whims of Congress – D.C. residents deserve to have a say in
how they’re governed and that includes representation in Congress!

right away! >>

Opponents of D.C. statehood are afraid that it would partially correct a
structural bias in the Senate’s composition, which overwhelmingly favors
low-population, rural states that are generally more conservative than the
rest of the country. But that imbalance in fact gives those residents more
power when they cast their votes, and results in public policy that is out
of touch with national popular sentiment.

grant representation for more than 700,000 residents in Congress >>

Thanks for all that you do,

Zach, People For the American Way
