Last week was a painful week for me in the Senate. Our latest attempt to protect voting rights was blocked again by Senate Republicans. We are not giving up the fight, but my Republican colleagues continue to deny that voting rights are in jeopardy.

As Republican legislatures blatantly remove polling places from counties where Black and Latino voters are overrepresented.

As Republican governors sign laws making it harder to vote, making it illegal to distribute food or water in hours-long lines at polling places, and gerrymander districts to discourage Black voters from casting their ballots — with “almost surgical precision,” according to one North Carolina court.

So I say to my Republican colleagues: Don’t lecture me about Jim Crow.

I know this isn’t 1965 — that’s why this makes me so outraged. It’s 2022!

I’m tired of hearing that this doesn’t have to do with singling out certain populations of our country. Not just Black voters, but students, Native Americans, and anyone who threatens the status quo that puts politicians like Mitch McConnell at a political advantage.

I’m proud to serve as New Jersey’s first Black senator. And it is my fervent hope that this November, we can elect a Senate majority that looks more like America. That’s why I’m putting my every effort into supporting my Democratic colleagues in races across the map and supporting new challengers to build our majority.

I need your help to do it. And that’s why I have to ask:

Will you make a $10 contribution to my campaign today to show that you reject Mitch McConnell’s retrograde views on voting rights and what it means to be an American? We must stand up to efforts from McConnell or anyone else to divide us.

These are not easy conversations to have, but I appreciate your willingness to have them. Thank you, friend.
