For months multiple factors have been contributing to large numbers of malnourished children in our feeding centers:
First, an economic crisis has caused food prices to skyrocket, with harvests affected by a drought in 2021. Subsequently, we saw a dramatic increase in cases of malnutrition earlier this year.
Second, the reduction of foreign aid for Afghanistan’s Ministry of Health has caused huge problems for health care facilities across the country. Many health facilities are severely under-resourced and understaffed, with some lacking medicines to treat patients. Many Ministry of Public Health employees have been forced to work without pay for months.
Even as MSF teams scaled up operations at our intensive therapeutic feeding clinic at Herat Regional Hospital, we have frequently been working over capacity.
