Following a total communication blackout due to damage to cabling that provides Tonga with internet connectivity, IPPF has finally made contact with our Member Association, the Tonga Family Health Association (TFHA). They have reported the ash cover to be significant and pervasive, stating that “the world is black and grey here.”
As with all disasters, the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs of women and girls are estimated to be high. TFHA is planning to help distribute Clean Delivery Kits, which facilitate clean and safe childbirth when women are unable to attend a medical facility. We estimate there are currently 1,456 women in Tonga who are currently pregnant, with over 200 due to give birth in the next month.
In addition, TFHA are looking to provide basic essential lifesaving SRH services, such as:
- Pregnancy and delivery support (including emergency obstetric and newborn care, postnatal care, and breastfeeding support)
- Post abortion care
- Contraception
- Clinical care for rape survivors
- Sexual and gender-based violence support
- Sexually-transmitted infection (STI) and HIV testing and treatment
- Public health awareness-raising within communities
