John,
The Republican National Committee has reportedly agreed to cover up to $1.6 million in legal bills stemming from the New York investigations into Donald Trump’s business practices, and has already spent about $700,000.
Since these are Trump’s personal legal expenses tied to his businesses, the RNC’s spending on these expenses is taxable income for Trump.
We’re sure that Trump is aware of his obligation to pay taxes on this income—after all, he once said, “I think nobody knows more about taxes than I do, maybe in the history of the world. Nobody knows more about taxes.” But just in case, we’ve sent him a letter reminding him.
Trump is already facing multiple legal investigations, and has previously paid a $2 million fine after illegally using his tax-deductible foundation to pay his personal expenses—a scandal first exposed by CREW—so we’re sure he’d like to avoid committing any further possible violations. Help make sure Trump and his accountants are aware of his tax obligations by sharing our letter on Facebook or Twitter.
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
President, CREW
