What if I told you the U.S. could erase over 16 million metric tons of climate pollution each year, simply by adopting new rules to how we monitor and control methane emissions? It sounds like a no-brainer, and luckily for us this scenario isn’t hypothetical.
Right now, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is considering new rules that will immediately reduce climate pollution by targeting oil and gas facilities and urging them to regularly find and fix leaks that emit this potent greenhouse gas into our atmosphere. This change will not only protect our environment, but also address pollution that is linked to cancer, asthma and other illnesses. But only with your support can we make this possible.
Submit a public comment before the January 31st deadline and show your support for these new rules that will immediately reduce climate pollution and hold oil and gas companies accountable!
The EPA has an unparalleled opportunity to lead the world in addressing climate change and seize on available, cost-effective solutions to slash methane emissions and protect the health of millions of people in the U.S. As you may already know, methane is one of the world’s most potent greenhouse gasses, with more than 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years after it reaches the atmosphere.
That’s why it’s critical that our leaders listen to our voices and tackle this potent source of climate pollution immediately, by adopting stronger rules than ever — and their latest proposal is an excellent start. If adopted, these rules will bring nearly 1 million older, pre-existing oil and gas wells under federal oversight. Here’s how EPA’s proposal protects us:
- Deploys proven, cost effective, zero-emitting technology to the field;
- Extends regulations to cover new and existing sources of methane pollution;
- Ensures that community voices are heard throughout the implementation process; and
- Bolsters requirements for screenings and inspections.
It’s a necessary step in the right direction, but we should still aspire and push for even stronger safeguards that protect communities on the frontlines of oil and gas development, and confront the climate crisis head-on. That’s why we need you to show your support and encourage the EPA to take the next step and improve upon this proposal. Only then will the U.S. truly be able to reign in methane waste from oil and gas companies and hold polluters accountable.
