Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin sank our best shot at protecting voting rights this year Indivisibles,
It was a bad week. Despite a years-long herculean effort from activists that moved dozens of Democratic senators into the “fix the filibuster” column, two rogue “Democrats,” Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin, sank our best shot at protecting voting rights this year.
Let’s be clear: Those two “Democrats” aligned with the Republican Party in voting to protect the Jim Crow filibuster instead of our voting rights. They tanked President Biden’s agenda and threw their lot in with Mitch McConnell.
There are going to be a lot of think pieces about what happened (Pro tip: Don’t let anyone tell you progressives did this -- conservative Dems Manchin and Sinema tanked a bill that EVERY. OTHER. SENATE. DEMOCRAT. across the spectrum supported), but here’s the truth: What we need now isn’t navel gazing. It’s accountability. Here’s what you can do:
- Sign up to contact voters and more with Give No Ground. The best way to ensure Manchin and Sinema can’t do this again is to expand our majority so they don’t get to cast deciding votes (plus, get Sinema out of office entirely).1 Give No Ground is our program to do just that and you can be a part of it.
- Donate to Indivisible Action. We’re running a multi-million-dollar nationwide voter contact and activism campaign this year, as well as planning for a primary challenge to Sinema in 2024. Donating will fund our organizing, ads, call tools, texting, postcards, and more -- this year and in the future.
- Text BETRAYED to 97779 to get all this election year’s breaking news updates sent directly to your phone. We get news to you as it breaks and text you how you can have the biggest impact, whether in Senate primaries, in congressional races, or at the state or local level.
We are going to fight like hell to put the power back in the hands of the people this year. That means working to expand our majorities in the House and Senate to ensure no one (or two) people can sink massively popular legislation and restrict our fundamental rights.
Accountability isn’t easy -- it’s going to take a ton of work day after day after day from Indivisibles all over the country. No matter if you’re a seasoned activist who’s been doing this for decades, or this is the first time you’ll pick up a phone, we need you all in. We’re going to canvass, and call, and text, and write letters, and march, and organize, and do everyTHING everyDAY to win this and expand our power.
We won’t lie to you. Winning a midterm election will be hard. And since conservatives tanked this bill, the cards are stacked against voters. But rather than letting that discourage us, we’re going to use it as the fire that kicks our movement into high gear.
Let’s go.
In solidarity, Indivisible Team
P.S. -- If you want to hear more about how to get involved, click here to join our Movement Call tomorrow night. We’ll talk through what comes next and more details about Give No Ground, our Endorsements program, and more.
1 Wondering why we’re talking about primarying Sinema and not Manchin? Right now, our best political calculus is that Sinema is beatable: We can defeat her in a primary and win the general, meaning we hold the Arizona Senate seat with someone better in it. West Virginia is trickier: We need to do more long-term power building (which we’re hard at work on). In the near term, we think the best way to disempower Manchin is to grow our majority so he has less influence. So we’re less focused on a primary challenge in West Virginia, though it sure would be satisfying.
