My brother David was born 10-weeks premature and needed multiple surgeries to save his life. His story is the reason why I got into politics. We are so grateful for the doctors and nurses who gave David the opportunity to grow into the man he is today (though it’s still weird to think of him as being older than 10…)
Here in the Valley, access to healthcare is a massive issue because we have a dangerous shortage of doctors and nurses. To show you how bad it is: when COVID hit and our ICU’s reached capacity, it wasn’t because we didn’t have enough beds - it was because we didn’t have enough doctors.
I fundamentally believe this is a justice issue. Valley families wait months longer for specialist appointments than in richer cities nearby. The quality of care in our country should not be dependent on zip code or income - it is a human right. So, I’ve dedicated a lot of my time to doing my part locally to fix it.
I’m happy to share we just secured two major grants from the Department of Health and Human Services: $939,906 for the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education Program and $1.18 million for the Valley Consortium, a non-profit based in Modesto that delivers first class training to medical professionals.
These grants are going to help us educate and attract more doctors and nurses right here in the Valley to make sure our families receive care from their doctor when they actually need it.
Wins like these are incredibly personal. There’s nothing more important than our loved one’s health. And I refuse to stop until the healthcare system is more just and more equitable for all our families, both locally and nationally.
