Team, Like many of the far-reaching anti-democracy bills the GOP passed last year, the impact was not immediately clear. But as the resulting laws are implemented in 2022, we are starting to see just how effective the GOP is at suppressing the vote. In Harris County, Texas, the largest county in the state and home to the incredibly diverse city of Houston, roughly 16% of absentee ballot applications have been rejected because of failure to meet new requirements like providing driver’s license numbers. This is a sevenfold increase in rejected ballots since 2018! In Travis County, home to Democratic leaning Austin, about half of applications received have been rejected because of new requirements. These requirements are meant to be burdensome and discourage folks from re-applying for absentee ballots, and this is just one of many tactics the GOP is deploying to suppress the vote.
