Folks,

Forty-nine years ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling in Roe v. Wade, a decision that protects the constitutional right to abortion and reaffirms a fundamental American value: government should not intrude in our most private and personal health decisions.

Despite Roe, reproductive freedom has been under attack in recent years, as states have passed over 170 bans and medically-unnecessary restrictions burdening access to abortion. It is clear that, unless we act as Congress to codify Roe v Wade, reproductive freedom will continue to be at stake for women across the country. My Democratic colleagues and I are fully committed to making sure everyone, regardless of income, race, zip code, insurance coverage, or immigration status is allowed to make their own decisions about their health and their future without political interference. That’s why this Congress, I voted to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, legislation that assures the reproductive rights first recognized in Roe are available to people everywhere.

I am proud to represent California in Congress, where abortion has been legal for sixty years now, and I promise to keep up this important fight for women nationwide.

All the best,
Doris Matsui
