As you are probably aware, voting, registering to vote, and voting by mail are a little different this year thanks to yet another Republican voter suppression bill passed by the Legislature last Summer.

I’m writing to you today to help you understand what you and your friends and family need to do to make certain you can vote—no matter which way you vote.

First, let’s talk about vote by mail. You’ve no doubt read about high rejection rates of applications for mail in ballot. Here’s what you need to do:
  • On your application, put both your driver license or ID number AND the last four of your Social Security Number. New laws require that you provide the one you registered to vote with—but most people have no idea which they used decades ago when they first registered. Putting both ensures your application won’t be rejected.
  • Once you receive your ballot, make sure to properly fill out the ballot and carrier envelope with all required information AND make sure to affix postage! The envelopes are not pre-paid
  • Track your mail-in ballot by going to VoteTexas.gov
For in-person voting, most rule changes won’t impact the average voter. But here are things you need to remember for early voting and Election Day voting:  One of the key roles of the county chair is helping you and our Democrats exercise their right to vote! Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sending you some emails with helpful tips you can use to protect your own vote with the new laws.

I’ll also be releasing a series of videos on my website and social media beginning Monday about my vision for the Smith County Democratic Party. Visit HankForChair.com or my Facebook page to view those Monday.

In Unity,

Hank Gilbert
