49 years ago today, the Supreme Court recognized the right to have an abortion in the landmark case Roe v. Wade.

It's an anniversary that now comes at a time when the Court seems poised to gut or overturn its precedent entirely.

We know it's an uphill battle ahead of us – both nationally and across the states. But that's why it's so critical to remember why keeping up the fight for abortion access is important. And that comes down to every one of us whose lives have been or will be impacted by having access to this critical care.

That's why today, we're launching a series in partnership with We Testify – an organization devoted to uplifting the voices of people who have had abortions – to highlight their stories.

No two abortion stories are the same, just as no two bodies are the same, but our storytellers share one thing in common: the liberation they experienced as a result of their abortion. ACLU Supporter, for so many of us, having access to abortion care opens the door to fulfilling educational and career goals, being a better parent, staying true to gender identities, and other critical parts of life that everyone should be able to choose for themselves.

Of course, the promise of Roe has never been a reality for everyone in this country – but that is why it is so critical that we keep pushing harder than ever and ensure that promise of equal abortion access is fulfilled for all of us right now, not just some.

Because no politician should make these decisions for us. The ability to control our bodies and our futures should be ours. That was true 49 years ago – and remains true today.
