We are in the most important year in People For's existence — and perhaps
for the very survival of American democracy.

So I'm writing today to ask you to [ [link removed]- ]renew your support of People For
with a 2022 contribution. Let me explain why.

Last weekend, Donald Trump used the Martin Luther King Day holiday weekend
to hold a rally and deliver a lie-filled speech in Arizona that was
bursting at the seams with naked appeals to white grievance, like claiming
that white people are being denied access to health care based on their
race. The rally featured other far-right extremists like Arizona Rep. Paul
Gosar, who has served as the unofficial congressional patron of at least
one white supremacist group.^[1]

Even the location of the rally was no mistake. Arizona was the very last
state in the nation to formally recognize the MLK Day holiday. It was a
move that echoed the famous racist dog whistle of Ronald Reagan announcing
his presidential campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi – the place where
Freedom Riders James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner were
murdered in 1964.

These astonishingly racist tactics forecast a 2022 Republican electoral
strategy that appeals to the very worst undercurrents in American
politics.

What’s just as dangerous is the growing movement on the Far Right to
replace election officials in key battleground states with Trump loyalists
– who have bought into the “Big Lie” about the 2020 election, and will be
expected to deliver victory to Trump and the Far Right no matter what the
voters decide.

In a video address to Pennsylvania Republicans last week, Trump even went
so far as to say "Sometimes the vote counter is more important than the
candidate” – and we know exactly what he means by that.

And as of now, according to the Washington Post, “at least 163 Republicans
who have embraced Trump's false claims are running for statewide positions
that would give them authority over the administration of elections."^[2]

It’s increasingly clear that the Far Right’s lies, racism and efforts to
subvert the popular vote of the American people are now a clear and
present danger to our democracy and long-held norms of self-governance.
The extremists and conspiracy theorists that formerly represented a fringe
element of the Republican base are now in near-total control.

People
For has always worked to expose and disrupt the Far Right, and stand up to
the forces of division and hate – and we plan to keep doing so. But as a
grassroots-funded nonprofit organization, we can’t do that without your
ongoing support.

We're scaling up the work that you know and support – and that has had
real impact – like pushing for confirmation of President Biden’s judicial
nominees to rebalance America’s courts after the rightward swing of the
Trumpian era, and reimagining public safety in cities nationwide with a
network of progressive mayors committed to building communities that
reflect the values of freedom, fairness, and opportunity for all.

We're investing significantly in holding and expanding Democratic
majorities in both the House and Senate this year. We will continue to
press for holding the January 6 coup plotters accountable. We will work to
elect Senators who will vote for legislation like the Build Back Better
Act and continue confirming the president’s nominees.

We need your help.
