The Supreme Court is positioned to overturn Roe v. Wade – and if they do, nearly half of the states in the country have laws on the books that will immediately ban abortion. This is an unacceptable assault on reproductive freedom – and economists are warning of devastating economic impacts as well.

In the abortion case currently being argued in the Supreme Court, over 150 economists signed an amicus brief to support the right to choose. That’s because Roe v. Wade is also an economic issue – this landmark case has had a positive impact on the ability of women to participate in our economy since the decision was handed down.

But with Roe v. Wade in jeopardy, we must codify it into law. Please, tell your senators: Protect reproductive freedom by passing the Women’s Health Protection Act.

Forced pregnancy increases poverty. According to a study, women who were denied an abortion are more likely to fall into poverty than women who receive abortions. In the case of young mothers, 60% live in households that qualify as being in poverty – and limiting abortion access will exacerbate this issue.

Forced pregnancy limits access to education. Abortion legalization in the 1970s increased Black women’s rates of high school graduation and college attendance. Today, more than half of people who choose to have an abortion are in their twenties – and without access to abortion, these students may have to drop out of school.

Abortion access increases participation in the workforce. According to multiple studies, abortion increases the percentage of women who participate in the workforce, especially single Black women. 

When abortion is widely accessible, it’s clear that more Americans can participate in the economy, improve their economic status, and stimulate economic growth. Overturning Roe v. Wade wouldn’t just be a disaster for personal freedom; it would have negative impacts on our economy.

That’s why Civic Action is calling on the Senate to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to federally codify reproductive freedom. It’s going to take a massive grassroots push to pass this legislation, so we’re counting on you to use your voice:
