Jack, Saturday, January 22 is the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. As we honor those who fought tooth and nail to secure abortion protections nationwide nearly 50 years ago, we must also confront the truth that Roe is not enough.
In 2021 alone, state legislatures enacted 100 abortion restrictions, part of the 400+ restrictions implemented in the past ten years. Texas’ SB 8—legislation that bans abortion at six weeks which the Supreme Court has allowed to remain in effect—is the most damning evidence that many parts of the country, particularly the South, are already post-Roe. If that wasn’t enough, abortion advocates are also waiting for a decision in a Mississippi that has the potential to decimate Roe entirely.
We don’t have to wait around hoping anti-abortion institutions will protect us. We can take care of one another and our communities by supporting abortion funds, organizations that work to ensure people who want or need abortion care are able to access it.
Abortion funds provide financial and practical support for people seeking abortion care. Please chip in $1 each to eight abortion funds working to remove barriers to care in their communities.

Commemorating Roe’s 49th anniversary requires us to think boldly and creatively about how not just to secure abortion rights, but create abortion justice. Abortion funds are a crucial piece of the puzzle, providing things like small grants, housing, transportation, child care, and translation services for people who need it.
This model of deep-rooted community care is a needed antidote to the anti-abortion playbook, which targets Black, brown, and Indigenous people, immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, disabled people, low-income people, youth, and people living in rural areas. By centering marginalized people, funds build a vision of liberated abortion access for all.
There’s no better way to work toward a country without abortion restrictions than by creating more opportunities for people to access care. Jack, can we count on you to chip in $1 each to eight abortion funds in states like Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana?
