I hope you don’t mind my writing you on a Saturday, but I think this is really important. This week, Republicans led an effort to stamp out two critical pieces of voting rights legislation that, if passed, would’ve ensured all eligible people can vote, and that their votes are counted – and I’m asking for your help to do something about it.

Passing this legislation seemed like a simple enough proposition, but not one Republican voted for it – not one.

The decision alone is devastating and disappointing, but then Mitch McConnell added insult to injury when he said – “African American voters are voting in just as high a percentage as Americans.”

And that’s when I got really angry.

I have three words for the Senator: Shame on you. African Americans are Americans, and what you’ve said is insulting to the legacy of John Lewis and others who’ve endured physical violence, imprisonment, and death for the sacred right to participate in our democracy.

Look, we could let our anger and disappointment at Senate Republicans hinder our ability to keep fighting, or we can transform that anger at this injustice into real change. I’m choosing the latter, and I’m urging you to do the same.
