John,
We've always needed to fight structural power for our freedom as women and people with marginalized gender identities — and today, as we celebrate the 49th anniversary of the passage of Roe v. Wade, we are gearing up to continue this fight, preparing ourselves for the probability that Roe won't make it to its 50th anniversary.
Roe has never been enough to protect true freedom. It has always been the floor, not the ceiling: it hasn't stopped restrictions or bans on abortions, nor has it ensured people with marginalized identities of all kinds can access safe reproductive care.
And yet, when the Supreme Court hands down its decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization this spring, we believe they will overturn Roe v. Wade, leaving abortion restrictions or protections to the states.
And at that moment, at least 22 states will outlaw abortion immediately.
This is unacceptable.
We must never forget that the vast majority of the American public believes abortion should be a right. In states where voting restrictions are tightening and redistricting power is up to gerrymandered state legislatures, we cannot let millions of people who live in these states continue to be forced to stay pregnant.
Our communities deserve abortion and reproductive care that is accessible and affordable. We deserve care when we need it and from providers we trust.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, women stepped up and took care of the elderly, children, and the sick. And in 2021, when the conservative rage from losing a national election swept through our states, it was LGBTQ+ people and trans kids who bore the brunt of the backlash.
And as conservatives work to dismantle Roe v. Wade in their effort to reinstall patriarchal family structures, it will be women, trans and nonbinary people, and the LGBTQ+ community who will come together and fight for our rights to control our bodies and to live full, authentic lives.
Walking into the future without Roe v. Wade will be complex and extremely difficult for many people; there’s no doubt about that. #VOTEPROCHOICE will continue our fight to protect reproductive freedom and elect prochoice champions at the state and local level who can stop these bans at their source. This is a powerful strategy to reverse all that ground we have lost.
Our 2022 strategy focuses on state and local races in Texas, Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, Michigan, and so many others where we will continue to coach candidates and activate voters like we’ve been doing for over six years. Whether it was flipping the Michigan Supreme Court from anti-choice to prochoice, or electing champions in states like Georgia who fight against supremacy in the halls of power every single day, #VOTEPROCHOICE has what it takes to build power and to win.
While we gear up for a major election season, we’re still demanding that the federal government steps up to do its part to protect abortion access and reproductive freedom.
#VOTEPROCHOICE empowers prochoice voters to consistently do our jobs at the ballot box, so it’s time for Congress to do their jobs and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act.
Stand with us and demand that the Senate passes the Women’s Health Protection Act to protect the right to access abortion in every state and the EACH Act to end the Hyde Amendment.
Equal access to abortion care — everywhere — is essential to social and economic participation, reproductive autonomy, and the right to determine our own lives.
When abortion care is accessible, communities thrive.
Thank you for your support, we can't do this without you — we're so thankful to have you in this work with us.
In solidarity,
