Today marks the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and despite the Supreme Court’s decision nearly fifty years ago, abortion care remains under threat. Anti-abortion politicians and advocates have continued to undermine abortion access both at the federal and state levels, and now the issue is before the Supreme Court yet again.
With a decision that could completely undermine Roe due any day now, we must codify the right to an abortion in federal law immediately!
WHPA would provide federal protections for reproductive health care broadly and abortion care specifically. Passing WHPA would lift barriers to care that disproportionately harm people of color, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, low-income people, and people living in rural areas, especially in states where extreme laws that virtually eliminate abortion access are being passed right now.
If the Supreme Court overturns Roe, they would be at odds with the 80% of the American people who agree that abortion should be legal.[1]
To prevent the continued spread of anti-abortion laws and the grave dangers they bring, the Senate needs to pass WHPA without delay.
Abortion care has never been at greater risk during our lifetimes than it is right now. To save every person’s right to access abortion care – and the huge number of lives at risk – we need urgent action in the Senate.
