John,
I don’t think Fox News likes me very much.
There is no greater threat to our democracy right now than the efforts of Republicans to suppress the votes of people of color. The U.S. Senate has failed to pass voting rights legislation to protect everyone’s right to vote, including marginalized communities.
So I called it like I saw it: In some respects, we can call it a racist Senate – a body that continues to use the arcane filibuster rule to deny civil rights legislation.

In the same committee meeting, GOP Rep. Chip Roy said that Democrats are “race-baiting” when fighting for the right to vote. It’s been well documented that Republicans are intentionally targeting people of color, like when they remove polling places in Black neighborhoods or remove Black Democrats from county election boards.
So I called it like I saw it: Chip Roy enjoys white privilege, and his opposition to any sensible voting rights protections means that he’s propping up white power systems.
This isn’t a time to shy away from the truth. I’m not going to sit by and pretend like the GOP isn’t targeting people of color. This country has seen conservatives do that before, and we can’t let it happen again.
Thank you,
Hank Johnson
