TakeAction Minnesota Weekly Wrap

Dear John,

I hope this finds you as well as possible. I’ll say up front that this Digest doesn’t include lots of news that unfolded this week but has more wide lens perspectives. If there’s any great pieces you’ve read lately, send them my way. Let’s get straight to the Digest.

Here’s what we’re reading, watching, and listening to this week:

1. The Abyss

Congress failed to pass voting rights. Build Back Better is falling apart. I felt heavy yet resolved reading this commentary in the Washington Post: The Left Dreamed about Remaking America. Now it stares into the abyss as Biden’s plans wither.

2. Nursing

Hospitals are businesses that want to maximize profits. Read and watch this powerful mini documentary in the New York Times on why nurses are leaving the profession in droves and what we can do about it.

3. Solidarity with Educators

Minneapolis and St. Paul educators are both in mediation over contracts and one step closer to going on strike. Watch the story about potential educator strikes.

4. Safety and Care

This is an older but excellent piece that popped up in my Twitter feed. Read Why Crime Isn’t the Question and Police Aren’t the Answer.

5. Jane

We highly recommend this piece. Read about Jane, an underground abortion network running in Chicago before Roe v. Wade.

6. Movement Memos

So many people have been sharing this podcast. Listen to this episode of Movement Memos, Bree Newson Bass: 'Capitalism has to Collapse.'

7. Station Eleven

I’m hearing tons of good things about this HBO show. Watch the trailer for Station Eleven, and let me know if you’ve seen it or read the book!

8. Art

A painting by a Detroit artist is going viral because a picture truly is worth 1,000 words. See the painting of ‘Critical Race Theory’ by Jonathan Harris and read the story.

9. Films

Here’s a list to bookmark. Check out the best movies and documentaries made on social justice.

10. Chess Humor

Ok, even my non-chess friends have shared this meme. Enjoy this fun little image from the perspective of a chess pawn piece.

That’s a wrap. Send me what you're reading.
