Dear John,
While today is the 49th anniversary of the historic Roe v. Wade decision, growing anti-abortion activism and a strong conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court has brought us closer to overturning this precedent than ever before.
Three of the nine justices sitting on the U.S. Supreme Court bench were handpicked by Donald Trump to fulfill his promise of overturning Roe. Just a few short months ago, the Court allowed a Texas law to operate that bans access to abortion after just six weeks of pregnancy. In addition, the law outsources enforcement to private predatory lawsuits, an arrangement that President Biden correctly described as "un-American."
Efforts to restrict or ban access to abortion are growing. The Guttmacher Institute predicts that, if Roe is overturned, 26 states are certain or likely to ban abortion. We cannot go backwards.
If the Supreme Court overturns this decision, Connecticut’s law will be our only protection –and we must ensure we elect leaders who defend the freedom of choice and access to quality reproductive healthcare at every level of government.
