Tomorrow is the 49th anniversary of the passage of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court case that protected the constitutional right to legal and safe abortion across the nation.

Prior to Roe v. Wade, Americans were too often prevented from making their own decisions about their own health care. And close to 50 years after the ruling, Republican state legislators are still trying to bring back that reality.

Last year, a new law went into effect in Texas effectively banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy with no exceptions — not even for rape and incest — whether or not that person even knows they are pregnant. Laws like this one deny women the autonomy to make their own decisions and put women’s health at risk.

Let me be very clear: no politician has the right to make these kinds of medical decisions for women across the country.

So to commemorate the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, I’m reaffirming my support for the right to obtain a safe and legal abortion in the United States. Please, add your name here to join me.

Truthfully, I’m angry we still have to have this debate close to fifty years after Roe v. Wade affirmed the right to choose in this country.

But it remains my hope that we can pass legislation that affirms the constitutional right to an abortion on the federal level.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for your support.

All my best,

Tammy Duckworth
