So why does he keep approving oil and gas leasing?
John,
Did you know that a quarter of U.S. climate emissions comes from drilling on public lands? And the Biden administration has even approved 35% more oil and gas drilling permits on public lands compared to Trump’s first year.
Biden’s administration has also given up more than 80 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico for oil and gas leasing, and just this month it announced new drilling in half of the Alaska Reserve.
To us, it doesn’t sound like President Biden is keeping his promise of “no more drilling on federal lands" to help stop climate chaos. That’s why Food & Water Watch is fighting harder than ever to protect public lands, by working to ban fracking and stop all new oil and gas drilling permits.
The Department of Interior is tasked with managing public lands and waters for the good of all of us, but so far it only seems interested in more and more drilling. The oil and gas industry has permits to drill on more than 26 million acres of federal land and more than 12 million acres of public waters.
Enough is enough. It’s time for President Biden to follow through on his campaign promise: No more drilling on public lands!
President Biden promised to listen to the science on climate change. And the science is overwhelmingly clear: Fossil fuels hurt people and our climate. Continued drilling only locks us into decades more air and water pollution, greenhouse gases, and the destruction of public lands and waters.
Together, we can and must push for the climate future we all deserve – a climate future free from reckless and dangerous drilling.
Onward together,
