Hey John, since California’s new congressional lines were finalized last month we’ve received a lot of questions about the process and Katie’s new district. Here are answers to some common questions:
Do I still live in Katie Porter’s district?
Katie will continue to proudly represent her current district—CA-45—for the rest of the year. But she is now running in CA-47, which includes her hometown of Irvine and stretches from Seal Beach to Laguna Beach, encompassing Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, and Costa Mesa.
Why wasn’t Katie drawn into a ‘safe blue’ seat?
California’s redistricting process is done by an independent citizens commission, made up of normal people, not members of the state legislature. This cuts down on partisan gerrymandering and is intended to produce more fair lines.
So will this make things easier or harder for Katie to win re-election?
Nearly 70% of the voters in CA-47 are brand new to Katie, meaning she’ll have to introduce herself to tens of thousands of new voters. This district also includes an equal number of Democrats and Republicans, meaning it's a real toss-up.
Add to that the fact that 2022 could be a tough year for Democrats across the country, and we’re looking at what could be Katie’s toughest race yet.
