John,
While the failure in the Senate this week of the big voting rights and democracy reform bill was a disappointment for all of us, we at Issue One aren't giving up the fight.
That’s why we released a brand new report with a package of meaningful election reforms we believe can win bipartisan support and pass this year — before the 2022 elections.
Produced with the Bipartisan Policy Center, Unite America, R Street, and the American Enterprise Institute, the report outlines a framework of key election administration proposals that have a history of bipartisan support in Congress and the states, including:
Increasing federal funding to states and localities for election administration
Implementing automatic voter registration
Ensuring at least 7 days of early voting before a federal election
Providing absentee voting options to all voters
Pre-processing mail-in ballots seven days before Election Day
Performing voter list maintenance at regular intervals
Adhering to minimum cybersecurity standards
Strengthening efforts to protect election officials from threats and harassment
As we know, while the 2020 election was the most secure election in American history, it also highlighted a failing infrastructure system in need of repair and revitalization — from federal funding shortfalls to the process of counting mail-in ballots.
Along with updating the Electoral Count Act and the Voting Rights Act, these are meaningful reforms we believe can get over the finish line before the 2022 elections.
Please check out the report and get ready to take action next week. We’ll be mobilizing across the country like never before, and we’ll need you with us every step of the way. Creating the breakthrough bipartisan moment we need to win real reforms is up to us. Issue One was built for this moment – and you helped build Issue One.
Onward,
Ethan Rome Chief of Strategy and Program, Issue One
