The Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen launched a series of sophisticated attacks against the United Arab Emirates this week.
Three people were killed and six injured from the combined cruise missile and drone attacks targeting several critical infrastructure sites in Abu Dhabi, including an Emirati air base housing U.S. and French forces.
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivancondemned the attack and pledged to "stand beside our Emirati partners against all threats to their territory."
Big picture: The precision of this latest attack from 800 miles away underscores the rapidly advancing strike capabilities of Iranian-backed proxies across the Middle East.
America's role: The United States must stand with our allies as they confront Iranian attacks and make clear to Tehran that the use and spread of drone technology will not be tolerated.
Congress' role: Congress should pass the Stop Iranian Drones Act. Authored by Reps. Gregory Meeks and Michael McCaul in the House and Sens. Bob Menendez and James Risch in the Senate, the legislation clarifies that existing U.S. sanctions on Iran’s conventional weapons program apply to Iran’s drone program.
The way forward: The United States should lead the way in developing and deploying counter-drone technology while strengthening sanctions on Iran’s weapons programs and proliferation.
