Twelve years ago today, the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision changed our campaign finance system for the worse. Since that ruling, America’s elections have been flooded with dark money. And accountability in our democracy has diminished. Trust in our government is continuing to erode, and people are becoming increasingly (and rightfully) frustrated with how broken our politics are.
Last year, Derek and his colleagues in the House voted to pass the For the People Act (H.R.1) to restore trust in our political process by enacting essential campaign finance reform. Derek wrote two of the provisions in the legislation that increase transparency in elections and crack down on politicians who cheat.
While we're still waiting on the Senate to take this critical reform legislation up for a vote, Derek and the House majority passed another democracy reform package last week: the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. This legislation will strengthen the voice of the American people in our democracy and end the dominance of big money in the political process.

Our politicians should work for the people, not the other way around. But with unlimited dark money spending, too many politicians are beholden to special interests instead.
There's far too much at stake for our country to let special interests continue to obstruct progress – voting rights, health care, climate change, reproductive freedom, and more are all on the line. We can't wait any longer for campaign finance reform if we're going to preserve our democracy.
